In-game Description
Light Torpedo
Torpedoes are significantly slower than other missile weapons but they provide far and away more firepower on impact than any other type. They are best utilised, therefore, against less agile ships and emplacements that cannot easily avoid the impact simply by moving out of the way. The Light Torpedo missile is a hot-launched weapon. This means the rocket motor fires immediately upon button-press and begins its slow, ponderous journey towards the target. This in turn imparts significantly more stress and maintenance costs upon the launcher itself. With an enlarged launcher comes a larger body which allows significantly more room for explosive mass in the weapon. This torpedo is a two-stage weapon with a powerful high explosive precursor warhead that violently rips a hole in the enemy vessel. A primary charge then detonates and turns the weapon into a massive and extremely damaging fragmentation grenade, more than powerful enough to rip apart most ships in a single blow. The Light Torpedo missile is extremely resilient to countermeasures.
Heavy Torpedo
The Heavy Torpedo missile is more commonly known as the Triton. Torpedoes are significantly slower than other missile weapons but they provide far and away more firepower on impact than any other type. They are best utilised, therefore, against less agile ships and emplacements that cannot easily avoid the impact simply by moving out of the way. Significantly more powerful than the Light Torpedo missile, this weapon is the premier choice against the heaviest and most durable of hostile vessels. No other weapon delivers as much destructive power as the Triton in a single explosive blast. The Triton missile is a hot-launched weapon. This means the rocket motor fires immediately upon button-press and begins its slow, ponderous journey towards the target. This in turn imparts significantly more stress and maintenance costs upon the launcher itself. Like its smaller counterpart, the Light Torpedo missile, the Triton is extremely resilient to countermeasures.
Tactical Overview
Light Torpedo
The Light torpedo is a bit strange. Why use something "light" against heavy targets? With its low damage and extremely short range, the Light Torpedo offers limited firepower and usefulness. However, its reload time of just 10 seconds is acceptable and allows for some degree of flexibility. Players may find the Heavy Swarm Missile to be a more effective alternative to the Light Torpedo. The Heavy Swarm Missile provides basically identical damage output, but with greater range, the ability to re-target, and at half the cost.
Heavy Torpedo
The Heavy Torpedo is packing a massive punch, and even small fighter wings can dismantle capital ships with impressive efficiency. To counteract the torpedo's slow speed, deploying it from fast fighters is recommended. The Heavy Torpedo is easily one of the deadliest weapons against capital ships. Equip a wing of fighters with those and just point them at a capital ship you no longer wish to see. The only downside is the cost when deploying Heavy Torpedoes in large numbers.
Advantages:
- Massive damage per missile (Heavy variant only)
- High resistance to Flares
- Decent damage per second
Disadvantages:
- Very low speed. Requires fast ships to be launched from
- Very expensive
- Only S and M ships get Torpedo Launchers
